North Carolina 2015 Tax Updates

Your North Carolina state tax return will look substantially different than it did last year. In an effort to simplify the tax code for 2014, North Carolina legislators lowered the tax rate across the board, increased the standard deduction for each filing status, and eliminated many credits and deductions.

The bad news: most of the credits and deductions you may have enjoyed in prior years are now gone. The deductions for retirement benefits, net business income, and contributing to a college savings program have been eliminated. Additionally, North Carolina removed the personal exemption, credit for child care expenses, and even the short-lived state earned income tax credit.

The good news: everyone will now be charged a lower flat 5.8% tax rate (2013 tax rates ranged from 6% to 7.75%, depending on your income level). Standard deductions all more than doubled, regardless of your filing status. And although most credits have been removed, the credit for children remains; it even increased from $100 to $125 per child for certain filers.
