Illinois 2015 Tax Updates

The Illinois Department of Revenue made some changes to their 2014 tax laws. The main change that most taxpayers will benefit from is the personal exemption increased to $2,125 per person. Other changes include a new surcharge on organizations with a medical cannabis registration, and minor changes were made to the list of Illinois tax-exempt interest.

Illinois will now only recognize civil unions that are recognized by the federal government. If your civil union is not recognized by the federal government, you will need to file separate Illinois returns.

Also, Illinois will no longer be accepting just the zip code option as an Illinois PIN. If you are e-filing, you will need to enter your Illinois 8-digit PIN, Illinois driver’s license or state ID information, or your 2013 Illinois Adjusted Gross Income.
